Nikon Announces D700 SLR
July 1, 2008 - Nikon today introduced the D700, offering several key features taken directly from its pro-level D3 camera, but priced at $2995.95, a fraction of the D3 price. The new camera incorporates the same 12.1-megapixel FX format CMOS sensor (roughly the size of a 35mm film frame) as the D3. The two cameras also share an extended ISO range, the same EXPEED processor and the same 51-point aufo focus system. New Nikon SB-900 Speedlight Promises Enhanced Power and Versatility
July 1, 2008 – Nikon today introduced its SB-900 Speedlight, offering higher light output, wider zoom range coverage and more advanced light-pattern control than its predecessor, the SB-800, which will be dropped from the product line.
The new flash, scheduled to ship in August for $499.95, offers three selectable light patterns: center-weighted, standard (same as the existing SB-800) and even, which is supposed to provide wide, even coverage tailored for group photography. Light output increases to 47ft./157.5m. at ISO 200. The SB-900 has the ability to move the flash tube and reflector system independently, allowing the system to tailor the light pattern to match the subject.

Ricoh Announces 12-Megapixel GX200
June 24, 2008 - Ricoh today announced the GX200, a 12-megapixel point-and-shoot with a 24mm super-wide-angle lens, manual control, RAW capture, and an optional removable tilting electronic viewfinder. The GX200 replaces the GX100, introduced in May 2007. It will be released in the UK in late July for £349.99, or £399.99 with the electronic viewfinder.

Sony's Back-Illuminated CMOS Chip Promises Higher Sensitivity, Low Noise
June 11, 2008 - Sony today announced a backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor promising nearly double the sensitivity and lower noise in images. Traditionally, front-illumination has been used. According to Sony, the new technology can be used in CMOS sensors for both digital cameras and camcorders. It follows the BSI technology announced by Omnivision last month for cell phone image sensors.

Pentax Adds Optio W60 to Waterproof Lineup
May 22, 2008 - Pentax today announced the Optio W60, a new addition to its line of waterproof point-and-shoots. Made for the outdoor enthusiast, the W60 can dive to depths of 13 feet underwater for up to two hours and survive temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. It features 10-megapixel resolution, an internal 5x optical zoom lens, a number of Scene modes and high-definition video capture. It will retail for $329.99 when it is released in July.

Canon Announces New Low-Cost SLR
June 10, 2008 - Cost-conscious consumers have another camera to consider with the impending introduction of the entry-level Canon Rebel XS digital SLR, announced today in Japan and due to ship in the U.S. sometime this summer. The XS is a slightly stripped-down version of the XSi, which shipped in April and scored well versus similarly-priced models in its Digitalcamerainfo.com review. "The XS is essentially about a clone of the XSi physically, especially from the front," according to Chuck Westfall, technical information advisor for Canon USA. Significant differences arise in four key areas.

Next Generation of Nikon Capture NX Editing Software Announced
June 2, 2008 - Nikon today announced the latest generation of its popular Capture NX photo editing software: Capture NX 2. The software builds upon Capture NX, adding new features such as an Auto Retouch Brush, enhanced Shadow/Highlight adjustment, and improved speed and control. Capture NX 2 will retail for $179.95 when it is released later this month, although a free 60-day trial is available on Nikon's website starting today.

Ricoh Launches Sturdy G600
April 22, 2008 – Ricoh today announced the G600, a 10-megapixel water- and dust-resistant point-and-shoot. With a tough, shock-resistant exterior, the G600 isn’t at all dainty. It features a wide-angle 28mm lens with 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD. Price and release date for the G600 in the US has not yet been announced, but it is priced at £350 (about $700) in the UK, and will be available in May.

Olympus Unveils E-520 DSLR
May 13, 2008 – Olympus today announced the E-520, a 10.1-megapixel DSLR. Marketed toward the entry-level DSLR user, the E-520 features built-in image stabilization, live LCD preview, 20 automated Scene modes, and face detection technology. When released in July, the E-520 will retail for $599.99 for the body only and $699.99 with a ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom lens.

Olympus Announces Super Wide-Angle Lens for E-System DSLRs

Adobe Revises Photoshop Express Terms of Use
April 7, 2008 – Adobe has rewritten the terms and conditions for its Photoshop Express beta following customer criticism. The changes, which go into effect April 10, changes language users felt gave Adobe too much freedom to use images posted on Express. According to a release from Adobe, “the original terms of service implied things Adobe would never do with the content within Photoshop Express.”

Panasonic Enters Touch-Screen Market with Lumix FX500
March 18 – Panasonic has just announced the DMC-FX500, a new point-and-shoot camera that includes a touch-screen LCD. The FX500 follows the trend seen on cameras by Sony, Pentax, and Kodak of moving controls onto a touch screen instead of dials and buttons. The FX500 features 10.1 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom lens, High Definition recording and Panasonic’s Mega O.I.S. (optical image stabilization). It will retail for $399.95 when it is released in May.
