September 17, 2008 – Ending months of rumors, Canon has announced its long-awaited update to the 5D. Armed with a 21-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, the 5D Mark II will be able to record full HD video with 1920x1080 resolution at 30 frames per second. The camera will ship in November for $2699 body only, and $3499 with a 24-105mm lens. Additionally, Canon will be releasing an update to its 24mm f/1.4L wide-angle lens, which will be available in December for $1699. See full story for additional details.

June 12, 2006 – Iconic lens manufacturer Leica Camera AG recently announced that it is tailoring its lenses to the digital camera market. Beginning on July 1, all Leica M lenses will come with 6-bit coding on the bayonet ring to ensure full functionality with digital cameras. The lenses can still be used on analog models, but the new coding will make them digital-specific for the planned digital Leica M camera.

April 4, 2006 – With the onslaught of spring rebate programs, Pentax announced its Your Choice program on three of its Optio digital cameras and 12 of its smc lenses. From April 1-July 6, 2006, when consumers purchase a lens, they can receive a mail-in rebate for $50-$100. That deadline ends June 30 for the digital cameras, which bring in a $30 rebate.

February 26, 2006 - Along with the Lumix DMC-L1, their first DLSR, Panasonic today announced the LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm/F2.8-3.5 ASPH lens, a 4/3 lens jointly developed with Leica Camera AG. According to a Panasonic press release, this lens is the first from Leica exclusively developed for DSLRs—but also notable is the lens’ incorporation of Panasonic’s MEGA O.I.S., their optical image stabilization system, along with Panasonic’s Venus Engine. It also sports an aperture ring in addition to a zoom ring.

February 21, 2006 - Nikon has today announced the 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor, a macro lens with vibration reduction which Nikon claims is the first of its kind. Nikon has loaded the lens with a number of features in addition to vibration reduction, including Silent Wave Motor (SWM) systems, Internal Focusing (IF), and a Nano Crystal Coat over Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass.
