Getty Images and Flickr have unveiled the “Flickr Collection” which is an image collection available exclusively on gettyimages.com for commercial licensing. Images from the Flickr Collection are available in both royalty-free and rights-managed licensing models.
“The Flickr Collection is determined by the lives of those who contribute to it,” said Andy Saunders, vice president of creative imagery at Getty Images. “The collection changes the definition of ‘stock’ photography by making it even easier for our customers to find and license imagery that is unexpected, genuinely original, and created by an untapped imagery resource – people everywhere.”

Its not all hunky dory in Flickr land, as many users are less than thrilled about the new video-sharing feature. The largest protest group, “We Say NO to Videos on Flickr already has around 25,000 members who are protesting the video feature since they feel Flickr is all about still photography.
However Flickr is not budging and staffer Heather Champ in a feedback thread wrote:
“We’re sorry, but video is here to stay. We need to continue to improve, release new features and iterate”.

Okay, so it isn't Photoshop, but Flickr's new online editing tools could be useful: it allows you to do basic image editing from within Flckr itself. The new features include color, exposure, resizing and red-eye editing tools using a system designed by Picnick. To use it , you just click on edit photo button in the top toolbar from within your photos list in Flickr, and it loads the tools within the browser. Our first experience of the new features was a bit mixed; it refused to work in the Firefox browser, the editing page was slow to load and the editing tools were rather slow as well when it did eventually load. Presumably that's because there are a huge number of Flickr users trying them out right now, so we'll see how it works over the next few days as they iron out the first set of bugs. But if they get it working faster, we can see this being a very useful tool for the serious photographer; although it won't replace Photoshop, it could provide an easier way to quickly edit an image after you upload it.
