by Tanya Palta

Carl Rytterfalk Fotografi reviewed the Sigma AML-1 close up lens and even posted a video review, which we recommend watching. The close up lens works great with the DP1 and the lens was found to be bright too. While the lens does suffer from slight negative distortion in corners, overall it manages to impress.

Excerpt from conclusion:
“For movies and portraits such as the ones above it’s a wonderful solution and gives you new views - plus that the extreme OOF is perfect for videos.”

Imaging Resource Reviews Sigma DP1

added on 2008-05-02 05:43:00
by Tanya Palta

The Sigma DP1 compact camera was taken for a spin by the folks over at Imaging Resource and as expected the camera shone through the review and failed to disappoint.

On testing the DP1, reviewer Shawn Barnett gave the camera a thumbs up for its excellent optic, low barrel distortion,  good image quality, sleek ergonomics and the 3.77 fps continuous mode. However JPEG images were found to be a tad disappointing and macro photographers should avoid the DP1.

Verdict:
“Sigma DP1 is not a good choice for the casual shooter; and JPEG shooting is really a bad idea. Its current lack of accessory lenses also makes the Sigma DP1 tough to recommend to most photographers looking for a small, light, multi-purpose digital camera. But for those looking for a particular vision, a single, unique way of making photographs with a wide-angle lens, the Sigma DP1 is worth a look.”

Pop Photo Reviews Sigma DP1

added on 2008-03-27 12:05:00
by Tanya Palta

The Sigma DP1, which is being hailed as the mother of all compact cameras was taken for a spin by the folks at Pop Photography. The DP1 is the only compact digital camera to utilize an APS-C size image sensor and according to the reviewer manages to “set a new standard for image quality in a compact camera”.

While it does not have the fastest AF system  however  it makes up by producing stunning images. The fixed 28mm-equivalent f/4 lens also produced low distortion and minimal light fallow out which further enhanced the image quality.

The Sigma DP1 Digital Camera finally got a price tag. Sigma USA marketing manager Thomas Sobey told Digitalcamerainfo.com that this high-end compact camera should see a March or April release date and will sport a price tag of $799.

"The image processing pipeline we had developed for the DP1 was not ideal for achieving the best image quality," CEO, Kazuto Yamaki said. "We had a choice between compromising image quality and moving forward or taking a different path. After long and sometimes intense discussions, we finally decided to change the entire image processing pipeline."

Sigma Claims Image Quality Issues Delaying DP1

added on 2007-11-30 14:10:00
by Richard Baguley

Camera manufacturer Sigma has released an open letter today that explains the delay with their long-awaited DP-1 camera. The camera was announced with much fanfare at the 2006 Photokina show, but nothing further was heard from the company after that. Now, they have issued an update that explains the delay: It seems that the issue lies with the quality of the images that the camera (based on the Foveon X3 chip) produces. Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki claims that the “the image processing pipeline we had developed for the DP1 was not ideal for achieving the best image quality...we had a choice between compromising image quality and moving forward or taking a different path. After long and sometimes intense discussions, we finally decided to change the entire image processing pipeline.”. This process involves a fundamental redesign of the camera, which could take some time. Yamaki did not comment on how long this redesign might take beyond saying that “we know that many people would like to know when the DP1 will be available for sale, we honestly cannot say at the moment.. Also, we feel that it is much more important to get it right than release it early.”

The full statement can be read after the jump.
