Another website to recently review the Sony Alpha A350 DSLR was Computer Active. As expected the camera managed to garner critical acclaim and was liked for its solid construction, its intuitive interface, its fast performance and its comprehensive feature set. However the average kit lens and the “plastic” body were listed as disappointments.

Steve Digicams put the Sony Alpha A350 under the spotlight and the camera passed with flying colors. Calling it an “outstanding” camera, the Alpha A350 offers great value for money. The DSLR is feature rich and also produced great image quality. It handled portraits extremely well and performed well even in low light conditions.
“Bottom line - Sony's "top of the line" entry-level Alpha 350 or DSLR-A350 is an outstanding camera. In this saturated market, consumers really have a lot of great cameras to choose from, all at competitive pricing. At about US$899 or less as tested, I feel the A350 offers a great value for such a well-balanced camera. The Live View performance offered by the A350 is way ahead of its competitors.”

The Sony Alpha A350 DSLR was tested out by the folks over at Trusted Reviews and the camera managed to impress. Calling it a “superb camera”, the reviewer in particular liked it for its live view feature and the 14.2-megapixel sensor.
Image and build quality didn’t disappoint either, and 100 and 200 ISO settings produced some great images. Image noise at higher ISOs was the only disappointment according to the reviewer.
Excerpt from the review:
“The Sony Alpha A350 is a superb camera, but anyone who was expecting a full professional DSLR like the A700 will be disappointed. Instead you get an A200 with the addition of live view and a massive 14.2-megapixel sensor. The live view system with fully-functioning AF and tilting monitor is much better than all its competitors…”

The Sony Alpha 350 was put on the spot by the folks over at Popular Photography and thinks its ideal for Prosumers. The camera may not be targeted at the professional photographer however the 350 does include a number of advance features. Image quality was found to be excellent from ISO 100 to 800 but according to the Pop Photo Lab tests, the 350 delivered less detail (average 2150 lines of resolution at ISO 100-800) than the 12.2MP Sony A700 (2280 lines). That is indeed food for thought.
“The A350 is aimed at those moving up from a compact or for those who want (and can afford) more from an entry-level DSLR than Sony is offering in its new A300 ($600, estimated street, with 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens), Nikon in its new D60 ($630, street, body only), or Olympus in its new E-420 ($500, estimated street, body only). For such photographers, the A350's increased image quality and overall performance will be amazing, and the extra features -- especially live view -- will be reassuringly familiar.”

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 is a winner according to the review posted at Camera Labs. The DSLR is not only packed with features but also doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance. In general use the A350 handles very well and even the auto-focusing performance is top-notch. The 14 megapixel resolution is impressive even though the continues shooting mode is disappointing.
Camera Labs concludes:
“Despite a few issues which will annoy technical photographers, the Alpha A350 is an excellent DSLR with great features and arguably one of the best Live View implementations to date. Given all it offers for the asking price we can easily award it our Highly Recommended rating. Other manufacturers watch out – Sony means business in the DSLR market.”

The folks over at DPExpert reviewed the professional Sony Alpha A700 DSLR and the only thing that didn’t impress them was the price. While testing the camera, the picture quality was found to be superb and the lens par excellence. The lens focused quickly however splurging $2000 for just the body was found to be unreasonable.
This is what the reviewer had to say in this end:
“We had an important little job to do, for which we would normally use our own camera. It is usually too risky to pick up a new camera for such a project, but the Sony felt so right in the hand and the lens was so seductive that we said: “What the heck!” We were delighted with the consistency of the images and the intuitiveness of the camera controls. Our advice is to buy the body on its own and then pair it with a good lens. The Sony kit, with body and short zoom lens, costs $2150. That is not doing justice to the camera. There is a Zeiss 16-80mm for $1250 – that is the way to go.”

Another Sony Lens to be reviewed by the website Dpreview is the Sony DT 18-70mm 1:3.5-5.6 review which is the standard kit lens for all the entry level DSLRs. Though the lens is for the average user, Dpreview found it to be inexpensive and reasonably capable.
The lens scores an extra point for its extended focal length range compared to other kit lenses (70mm vs. 55mm). The Sony DT 18-70mm 1:3.5-5.6 provided consistent image quality across most of the range and impressed in low light conditions.
Excerpt from the review:
"In summary, the 18-70mm is perhaps a reasonable starter lens, but if you really want to get the most out of the latest 10Mp+ DSLRs, you'll certainly need to find an alternative which can deliver the resolution the sensor demands. Personally I'd suggest anyone buying a new Alpha DSLR should look elsewhere for a better performing lens.”

Andy Westlake from Dpreview reviews the Sony DA 16-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens which was announced in September 2007. The Sony DT 16-105mm F3.5-5.6 has an incredible zoom that is useful in a majority of shooting conditions. The lens was found to be extremely sharp at wide angle and also exhibited an impressive resistance to flare.
However like most lenses the Sony DA 16-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 had its shortcomings. One came across Chromatic aberration at both wide-angle and telephoto ends and in telephoto mode the images were found to be soft.
In the end Westlake concludes:
“In summary, this is a very good lens for Alpha users. The versatility of the focal length range goes a long way towards making up for the inevitable optical compromises, and as such the lens easily earns our recommendation.”

Photo Review has done a nice little review of the Sony's A350 DSLR who they feel is a great upgrade for point and shooters and the more serious photographer. The camera is a step up from the A200 model in both features and performance however one can avoid the kits lens.
The Sony A350 supports live view shooting and has a solid grip making it extremely comfortable to shoot with. The camera supports two aspect ratios for image recording; the standard 3:2 and an additional 16:9 format. On running the Imatest, the website came to the conclusion that the camera can handle very high resolution with only minimal variation in line widths/pixel height figures throughout the ISO range
The reviewer concludes:
“Sony's A350 DSLR has something to offer to both digicam upgraders who are looking to buy a more sophisticated camera and photo enthusiasts who want a high-resolution camera with all the latest shooting controls.”

The Sony Alpha A700 DSLR was recently tested by stock photographer Peter K. Burian for the website Shutterbug. Burian calls the camera “powerful” and recommends it to even semiprofessional photographers. When compared to the A100, the A700 was found to be more rugged, more solid and much faster. The only thing found lacking on the A700 was a Live View mode and to read the full review head over here.

The Sony Alpha A700 was recently reviewed by the folks over at Think Camera and the DSLR impressed them with its wide range of features,. The reviewer at Think Camera was glad that Sony chose to incorporate image stabilization and a dual anti-dust system something which is not commonly found on other digital SLRs.
The A700 comes bundled with a 18-70mm lens, which was found to be just about average as certain images lacked sharpness. Overall the A700 scored 8 out 10, which is not bad considering Sony, has to compete against established names like Nikon and Canon.
