The folks over at DPExpert reviewed the professional Sony Alpha A700 DSLR and the only thing that didn’t impress them was the price. While testing the camera, the picture quality was found to be superb and the lens par excellence. The lens focused quickly however splurging $2000 for just the body was found to be unreasonable.
This is what the reviewer had to say in this end:
“We had an important little job to do, for which we would normally use our own camera. It is usually too risky to pick up a new camera for such a project, but the Sony felt so right in the hand and the lens was so seductive that we said: “What the heck!” We were delighted with the consistency of the images and the intuitiveness of the camera controls. Our advice is to buy the body on its own and then pair it with a good lens. The Sony kit, with body and short zoom lens, costs $2150. That is not doing justice to the camera. There is a Zeiss 16-80mm for $1250 – that is the way to go.”

The Sony Alpha A700 DSLR was recently tested by stock photographer Peter K. Burian for the website Shutterbug. Burian calls the camera “powerful” and recommends it to even semiprofessional photographers. When compared to the A100, the A700 was found to be more rugged, more solid and much faster. The only thing found lacking on the A700 was a Live View mode and to read the full review head over here.

The Sony Alpha A700 was recently reviewed by the folks over at Think Camera and the DSLR impressed them with its wide range of features,. The reviewer at Think Camera was glad that Sony chose to incorporate image stabilization and a dual anti-dust system something which is not commonly found on other digital SLRs.
The A700 comes bundled with a 18-70mm lens, which was found to be just about average as certain images lacked sharpness. Overall the A700 scored 8 out 10, which is not bad considering Sony, has to compete against established names like Nikon and Canon.

Its that time of the week again. Sony A700 digital SLR users get ready to hit the update button as Sony has released firmware version 3. Head over to the Sony Update Page for the download and instructions.
Benefits over firmware version 2:
* Resolves an issue where the Access Lamp remains lit and the camera stops responding when several pictures are taken in rapid succession.
* Resolves an issue where powering the camera off while in "MR" mode may cause some registered settings to carry over to other shooting modes.

The Sony Alpha 700 is the latest SLR to fall under the spotlight at DP Review, with their conclusions generally being favorable. They praised the image quality and the low noise, as well as the color that the camera captured. General performance and handling were also praised, but they were less impressed with the RAW shooting (the Alpha 700 applies noise reduction before it save the RAW image, which kind of defeats the point of shooting in RAW) and the ISO range; they claim that the sensor has a base sensitivity of 200 ISO, which means that running it at 100 ISO isn’t going to give you the best image quality.
