World’s Smallest Servo Motor Rotates at 9,000 RPM

December 8, 2005 – The Nekkei Business Daily reported that Shicoh Engineering Co. has developed the world’s smaller servo motor. The servo motor, just 4 mm in diameter, could replace the stepping motors currently used for autofocus and digital camera zoom lenses, as well as camera phones.

The new tiny servo motor houses a position sensor that converts magnetic signals into electric signals that can control the motor’s rotation speed and position.

This new motor will be comparably priced to its stepping motor counterpart; however, the small servo motor is capable of reaching 9,000 rpm. Production is set to begin early 2006 and ramp up to10 million units per month by the middle of the year.
