Audio Slideshow: UCLA Library Creates Online Database for Historic News Photos

May 23, 2007 - The UCLA Library recently launched an online database of more than 5,000 images from the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News photo archives. The collection, called "Changing Times: Los Angeles in Photographs, 1920-90," depicts the city's history over the course of 70 years.
The photos were chosen from a collection of more than 3 million images taken by the newspapers’ photographers between 1920 and 1990.
"The images in the online collection were selected because they show historically and socially significant people, places and events, as well as everyday life in Southern California," according to the press release. "Subjects represented reflect broad categories of arts and culture, crime and law enforcement, the entertainment industry, politics, popular culture and trends, religion, sports, and urban and economic development."
The database was developed as a resource for local historians and educators throughout Southern California, according to the release. It is searchable by a wide variety of subjects and by keyword. Each photo includes the title, the year it was taken, the published caption, publication date, a description of the print photo, source, and the appropriate copyright contact.
The images can be downloaded for educational and non-commerical uses, according to the release. Commercial uses requires advance written permission. Click here to go to the collection.
