Toshiba Announces Ultra High-Speed, Class 6 SD Card
August 25, 2006 - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. announced yesterday two SD product series, the high-speed series and ultra high-speed series SD memory cards. The Class 4 and Class 6 speed cards will be available worldwide in the fall. The two product series possess faster memory transfer speed and read-write processing, according to yesterday’s Toshiba press release. The new high speed series can process up to 5MB per second, a SD Card Association Class 4 category. The ultra high-speed series is a Class 6 SD card. As the first in the industry, stated the release, the Class 6 SD card can process 20MB per second.
The SD Card Association defined class speed based on transfer rates in May 2006. Part of the new line will include class speed-specific packaging, clearly labeled with the class speed. "The speed class is important to maximize performance for demanding applications and help the consumer choose the right card for their camera or camcorder," said Brian Kumagai, NAND Flash and TAEC business development manager.
The Toshiba Class 4 and Class 6 cards come in 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB increments. The cards will be available in Japan in October and globally in November.
The ultra high-speed and high-speed SD cards will be officially introduced at the IFA 2006 consumer electronics exhibit in Berlin, Germany in September.
