September 18, 2006 – Last Thursday, Tamron announced a compact AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di-II LD Aspherial (IF) Macro tele-zoom, possessing the “world’s greatest zoom ratio of 13.9x,” according to the press release.
Boasting that the new lens has the longest focal length among dedicated DSLR lenses starting at 18mm, the Tamron lens has a focal length of 18-250mm, equivalent to 28-300mm in 35mm format, according to the release. The f/3.5-6.3 macro lens can focus at a minimum of 17.7 inches.
The Tamron 18-250mm lens has an expanded focal length over its predecessor, the Tamron 18-200mm lens. The manufacturer also based the new lens construction on the AF 28-300mm lens. Weighing 15.2 ounces, the 18-250mm lens retains the compact design and adds a new branded gold band between focusing and zoom rings.
The Tamron zoom has 16 elements in 13 groups. The lens comes equipped with a LD (low dispersion) glass element and AD (anomalous dispersion) lens to reduce chromatic aberration and has multiple “Internal Surface Coatings” to minimize flare and ghosting.
The Tamron 18-250mm lens fits APS-C sensor DSLR mounts, including Canon, Nikon, Sony Alpha, Pentax, and Samsung bodies.
The Tamron 18-250mm Di-II LD Aspherical Macro will be available next year, but pricing has not been announced, according to a Tamron representative.
