April 27, 2007 – Sony Europe yesterday announced its highest optical zoom point-and-shoot yet, the Cyber-Shot S800 with a 6x optical zoom lens. The 8.1-megapixel camera will be available in Europe at the end of May.
“Pulling you closer to the action, the 6x optical zoom lens offers the highest magnification ever from a compact Cyber-shot model – boosted further still to 12x with digital zoom,” stated a company press release yesterday. “In macro mode it’s possible to focus right down to 2cm for fantastic close-up views of any subject.”
The new 6x optical zoom sets a new zoom standard for Sony; previously, the company's point-and-shoots were fitted with a 3x optical zoom lens. The new S800 is capable of wide 16:9 shooting and has a 2.5-inch, 230,000 pixel LCD screen.
Geared for beginners, according to the release, the Cyber-shot S800 features a Function Guide that explains its shooting modes. It has a sensitivity range of up to 1250 ISO and takes 390 shots per battery charge on AA NiMH batteries. The camera accepts Sony-specific Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo media.
No details on pricing or U.S. availability have been announced yet.
The Sony Cyber-shot S800 will be available for pre-order from the Sony Europe website.
