Conclusion

Sony made some interesting choices with the Cyber-shot DSC-TX7. Rather than offering more megapixels, this compact camera offers a longer feature list. While other point & shoots are upping the megapixel count to 12 and 14, the TX7 actually takes a step back to 10 megapixels, and it is a better camera for that. We found that it shot good looking images, with low noise and a good amount of detail. And the back illuminated Exmor R sensor allows it to offer a lot of interesting features that were previously only available on larger models like the Cyber-shot DSC-HX1, including a very effective anti-shake stabilization mode and a very good panorama mode that shoots panoramas with a single press of the shutter.

Although the LCD screen that takes up most of the back of the TX7 is very bright and sharp, the touch screen is less than perfect. When using your fingers, it misses some touches and you can sometimes end up pressing the wrong button. The included stylus (Sony calls it a Paint Pen as it is designed for use with the included painting application) makes things a little easier, but it is annoying that you have to use this to get the best results.

Of course, these features come at a price: at around $390, the TX7 is an expensive compact camera. It is also lacking the manual control features of its larger sibling the HX1. But it is small, easy to handle, has a great screen and shoots good looking images. The new features it offers are mostly genuinely useful, so it would be a great pick if you can afford the slightly high sticker price.
