The Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 has a lot of potential. It's not the top of the heap when it comes to megapixels (9 megapixel compacts are cheap these days), but it adds a number of interesting new features that could be extremely useful. We found that the Handheld Twilight and Anti-motion Blur features worked pretty well, and the panorama shooting was as easy as promised; press the button, pan the camera and it does the rest. And the addition of high definition video adds to the tasty-sounding feature stew, although we will reserve final judgment on these features until we get a review unit in for more extensive testing. It also stacks up well against the just announced Canon SX1 IS; it is $100 cheaper and has a comparable set of features. However, the Canon has a superior screen (as it can tilt in more directions) and shoots higher resolution video.
And the other factor here is cost; at a recommended price of $499, it is nearly as expensive as an SLR. It does offer some features that no SLR does, but you are also stuck with the built-in lens; you can't change that if you find it limiting, while an SLR offers a whole range of lenses. However, for the casual photographer who wants a simple package of decent zoom and likes the look of the other new features, the HX1 could be an attractive choice.
