December 6, 2005 - Slate has teamed with Magnum Photos (the pioneer freelance photojournalist cooperative founded shortly after WWII) to launch a new feature called "Today's Pictures." "Today's Pictures," which debuted on November 30th, kicked off with highlights from the vast wealth of images in the Magnum archives.
The regular feature seeks to showcase images of historical, cultural or political significance that tie in with a timely topic being covered elsewhere by Slate.
Also featured each month, will be two slideshow documentaries produced by the Magnum in Motion branch of Magnum. These photo documentaries seek to place each photo series in better context for the viewer by blending audio, text and voice over narration into the usual stills slide show. Crossings by Alex Webb features the photographer's coverage of Mexican border crossers in both direction from 1975-2001 and includes his musings on his coverage of the Mexican-American Border. The interactive essay emphasizes the human dimension of the multi-faceted issue of immigration reform and border security currently a hot topic in US political discourse, of which Slate is a part of.
