Cologne, Germany, September 27, 2006 – Along with the announcement of the new SD14 DSLR, Sigma introduced the high-end compact Sigma DP1 today.

The Sigma DP1 has the same 14.1 megapixel X3 Foveon sensor, used in the Sigma SD14 DSLR announced yesterday. The Sigma DP1 has a 2.5-inch LCD, RAW format capabilities, and a 16.6mm f/4 lens. Combined with Sigma’s True image processor, the new sensor promises a 40 percent increased pixel count over previous X3 image sensors, according to Sigma’s press release.

The new Foveon sensor is a product of the first collaboration between Sigma and manufacturer Dongbu Electronics of Seoul, South Korea. After a year of development, the new sensor is hailed as the only image sensor that can vertically stack red, blue, and green pixels, stated the release. Comprised of three layers of silicon photo sensors, the Foveon X3 is a high resolution sensor to reduce color artifacts in images, stated the release.

“Foveon chose Dongbu Electronics as our foundry partner because they are a leading image sensor foundry with cost-effective high-quality image sensor manufacturing capabilities as well as an industry-wide reputation for technology leadership,” said Foveon vice president of operations David Matteucci. Foveon and Dongbu Electronics plan to pursue collaborations in the future.

Sigma has not released pricing and availability information on the Sigma DP1.
