Sharp Unveils Fingernail-Sized Wireless LAN Module

March 14, 2006 – Sharp unveiled the DC2J1DZ115 wireless LAN module last week. The module is smaller than a fingernail and was designed for use in camera phones and small portable devices to give them wireless capabilities.

Sharp’s wireless LAN module measures 10 x 10 x 1.6 mm, which is less than half the size of the Kodak EasyShare-one’s wireless card. Sharp claims its module is the industry’s smallest and most power efficient, as it uses 0.9 mW an hour on standby.

According to Sharp’s March 9 press release, the new technology incorporates high-frequency amplifier technology and pairs it with a power management unit and a media access controller – all crammed in a 1.6 mm shell.

The Sharp wireless LAN module will be available to manufacturers this month at a cost of 20,000 yen or about $170 USD.
