Sharp Introduces Industry’s Smallest Camera Module with Optics

March 17, 2006 – Sharp Japan introduced the industry’s smallest camera module with optics, a 0.11-megapixel system that is smaller than a ladybug. The Sharp LZ0P396D is only a 5 x 5 mm square that is 2.4 mm thick. The CMOS module is designed for use in camera phones.

The tiny Sharp LZ0P396D can capture low-resolution still images and video at a rate of 30 frames per second. This tiny module is designed with high density technology and is meant to be a second camera in a camera phone.

Mass production will begin next month, with each Sharp module costing about $10. The company expects to manufacture 400,000 modules each month.
