Second Life Users React to Flickr's Exclusion of Screenshots

June 16, 2006 – Popular online photo sharing provider Flickr has recently encountered a wave of dissatisfied users looking to post and view screenshots of digital art images. Second Life, an online gaming community of 200,000 international participants, wishes to post screenshots and images of virtual humans on Flickr. Flickr’s capabilities, however, are limited to selective public viewing of non-photographic images, to the discontent of Second Life users.

"We want to enable new ways of organizing photos," according to Flickr’s mission statement listed on their website. The mission statement revolves around the use of photos and makes no mention of non-photographic images for viewing.

Similarly, artists seeking to put their non-photographic images online have encountered the same problems with Flickr.

Flickr’ stance of non-photographic images has led Second Life members flocking to Snapzilla, another photo-sharing provider.
