SanDisk Announces 1 GB xD Card

March 10, 2005 – With the increasing megapixel counts of digital cameras come increasing storage capabilities. SanDisk introduced a 1 GB xD-Picture card today, following announcements of 10 fully compatible four-megapixel and higher Fujifilm and Olympus digital cameras last month.

“Higher megapixel cameras and video recording features typically require higher data storage capacities,” said Susan Park, SanDisk’s xD product marketing manager. “These new Olympus and Fuji digital cameras are all in the four-to-seven megapixel range, and consumers who buy them are going to benefit significantly by using high capacity flash storage cards.”

The card can hold about 800 images at full 5-megapixel resolution. The new one gigabyte card is expected to begin shipping in April for a suggested retail price of $139.99. With this, SanDisk’s line of xD-Picture cards range from 64 MB to 1 GB. The cards will be sold in Fujifilm and Olympus brand packaging. SanDisk plans to release xD memory cards up to 8 gigabytes in the future.
