Samsung Updates Point-and-Shoot Series

January 7, 2007 – Samsung Camera updated its point-and-shoot series with today’s announcement of the S730 and S630. These digital cameras replace the S700 and S600, respectively. The new Samsung S730 and S630 have 3x optical zoom lenses, 2.5-inch LCD screens, and optical image stabilization – a new addition to the S-series. The new cameras will be available in the spring.

The cameras both have the same resolution as their predecessors. The Samsung S730 has 7 megapixels like the S700, along with a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD screen, movie mode with VGA capturing capabilities, and 20 MB of internal memory.

The Samsung S630 has many of the same features as the S730. The 6-megapixel camera has the same 3x lens, movie mode, and internal memory. It also has a 2.5-inch LCD screen like the S730, which is a slight upgrade from the S600’s 2.4-inch LCD screen.

The only major upgrade from the older cameras is the addition of optical image stabilization, which Samsung calls ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction). The new 2.5-inch LCD screens also have an automatic brightness adjustment that makes viewing the screen easier outdoors.

The new models also have one downgrade; the movie mode’s frame rate maxes out at 15 fps instead of the 30 fps available on the older models. The new Samsung S730 and S630 are powered by AA batteries and measure 3.9 x 2.5 x 1 inches. The Samsung S730 will retail for $199, and the S630 for $179; both will be available in the spring.
