Introduction

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Low Light Sample

Focal length: 5.2 mm (24mm equiv)
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/1.8
Shutter speed: 1/15 of a second

This hand-held shot of the Old Grey Lady shows the advantage of having an f/1.8 lens: even with just streetlights, we were able to shoot hand-held at 1/15 of a second without having to bump the ISO up. The result is a sharp, clean image with good detail.

Landscape Sample

Focal length: 5.2 mm (24mm equiv)
ISO: 80
Aperture: f/3.9
Shutter speed: 1/350 of a second

This shot of a no entry tree taken in the camera Smart Auto mode shows the good level of detail that the TL500 captures: the text on the sign is sharp and clear. The camera decided to compromise on the ISO and aperture, but this means that the background is slightly soft and out of focus. However, putting the camera into aperture priority mode and manually setting the aperture would have provided more flexibility here if required.

Landscape Sample 2

Focal length: 5.2 mm (24mm equiv)
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/1.9
Shutter speed: 1/60 of a second

This shot of the mystic river was taken with the camera in the Forest color mode, where the camera boosts the greens to create a more foresty feel. It works pretty well, boosting the greens of the leaves without giving the other objects a color cast. The level of detail in the image is also good: the reflections on the water, for instance, are well captured.

Low Light Sample (Night Mode)

Focal length: 14.1 mm (66mm equiv)
ISO: 80
Aperture: f/2.3
Shutter speed: 1 second

Shot in our studio on a tripod under minimal lighting, this shot shows how the TL500 can still bring it in low light. We put the camera into night mode, which upped the shutter speed to 1 second, but kept the ISO low. The result is an attractive image with good color and plenty of detail, although you will definitely need a tripod at this shutter speed; there is no way to hold a camera steady for a second hand-held.
