Digital Camera Review

Samsung’s latest barrage in the battle of the budget cameras is the S730 and S630, two 7.2 and 6 megapixel cameras priced at $199.99 and $179.99 respectively. Apart from the resolution, the two cameras are identical, so we’ve looked at them together. Both include 1/2.5-inch CCD image sensors, 2.5-inch LCD screens, 3x zoom lenses and Samsung’s ASR (Auto Shake Reduction) mode, which they claim reduces camera shake by increasing the ISO setting and shutter speed. We looked at some pre-production prototype models at the CES show in Las Vegas; the final versions of both cameras are due to be released in Spring 2007.

Picture Quality / Size Options
The following size option are offered: 7 megapixels (3072 by 2304 pixels), 5 megapixels (2592 by 1944 pixels), 3 megapixels (2048 by 1536 pixels) and  1 megapixel (1024 by 768 pixels). Three options for image quality are offered: Super Fine, Fine and Normal.  At the maximum resolution of 3072 by 2304 pixels and the highest image quality, each image would take around 5MB of storage space.

Picture Effects Mode
Pressing the E (for effects) button on the back of the camera brings up the effects menu, where you can make photos black and white, shift colors around or create other special effects such as picture frames. These are gimmicky, and I doubt that many people will actually use them. You should remember that there is no way to undo the effect once it is applied.
