Samsung Presents 4GB Memory Chip for Mobile Phones

March 21, 2006 – From the third annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum, the company announced some developments in its semiconductor technology segment. Samsung introduced a 4GB memory chip for mobile phones called moviNAND. The company also announced that its OneNAND technology will be incorporated in an external memory card for the first time.

The 4GB moviNAND is designed for mobile applications that need vast stores of memory for music, video, photo, and document files. Samsung created the moviNAND chip by fusing a MMC v. 4 controller with 4GB of NAND. The chip can transfer 52MB per second. Samsung expects big things from its moviNAND technology. It is expected to bring in $300 million this year and $5.3 billion in 2008.

The OneNAND technology has been used in other Samsung electronics, but hasn’t been implemented onto a removable memory chip until now. This fusion memory process provides much faster transfer speed than standard NAND technology. OneNAND can read 68MB a second and write 9.3MB a second.

Samsung will offer its OneNAND technology in 32-256MB MMC cards within the next few months. Larger 512MB and 1GB cards are expected to be available by the end of the year.
