October 10, 2006 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced today the “world’s first 10 megapixel mobile phone (model: SCH-B600) in Korean market[s],” according to today’s Samsung press release. The high resolution camera phone with 3x optical zoom, MP3 player, and mobile TV function retails for 900,000 won (equivalent to $900 USD) in Korea.
The Samsung camera phone, priced at the same cost of the 10.1 megapixel Canon XTi DSLR kit, has a 3x optical zoom lens, manual and auto focus, white balance controls, continuous shooting, and video capabilities at QVGA resolution at 15 and 30fps. In addition, the Bluetooth-enabled Samsung SCH-B600 has a business card reader, voice recorder, and is compatible with external MultiMediaCards.
Samsung, the first mobile phone company to combine the cell phone with a camera in 2000, according to the release, has announced other firsts in the industry. In October 2004, Samsung launched the world’s first 5 megapixel camera phone. In July 2005, Samsung unveiled the world’s first 7 megapixel camera phone, the SCH-V770.
The new 10 megapixel SCH-B600 is 6mm (0.23-inch) thinner and 10g (0.35 ounces) lighter than its 7 megapixel predecessor, stated the release.
