June 24, 2008 - Ricoh today announced the GX200, a 12-megapixel point-and-shoot with a 24mm super-wide-angle lens, manual control, RAW capture, and an optional removable tilting electronic viewfinder. The GX200 replaces the GX100, introduced in May 2007. It will be released in the UK in late July for £349.99, or £399.99 with the electronic viewfinder.
Like the GX100, the GX200 features a wide-angle 24 to 72 mm (35 mm film equivalent) lens with 3x optical zoom, which is appealing to users who shoot a lot of landscapes or group shots. It updates to Ricoh's new Smooth Imaging Engine III (SIE III) image processor for decreased noise and improved image quality, and boosts resolution from 10.1 to 12 megapixels. The LCD is also larger, up to 2.7 inches, with an impressive 460,000-pixel resolution.
The GX200, like the GX100, can shoot in RAW format, favored by professional photographers who want maximum flexibility while editing. It can also shoot JPEGs and Motion JPEG videos, and comes with a built-in pop-up flash.
The removable electronic viewfinder attaches to the camera's hot shoe and tilts for low-angle photography, although the LCD can also be used to frame images.
While the GX100 ran on AAA batteries, the GX200 upgrades to a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
