Pentax launches its first ultra-zoom with the X70, with an impressive 24x zoom, 12-megapixel resolution and CCD-shfit stabilization to help prevent camera shake. The camera will arrive in April for a recommended price of $399.95 We had the opportunity to try out a pre-production model at the PMA trade show in Las Vegas. Here's what we discovered.

Conclusion |
|
Pentax's foray into the world of ultra-zooms doesn't break the mold of the majority of other such cameras. It retains the typical pseudo-SLR look, the full manual controls, and the massive 24x zoom that's becoming more and more common. The maximum lens aperture of f/2.8 is quite speedy, and the camera feels solidly constructed. The Pentax X70 will be available in April for $399.95.
