Panasonic Unveils Lumix DMC-LS80

Jan. 21, 2008 - Panasonic has unveiled the DMC-LS80, an addition to its budget-friendly line of digital cameras. The 8.1-megapixels camera features optical image stabilization, a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen with 230,000 pixels. Price and availability have not yet been announced.

The LS80 is the successor to last year's LS70, a 7.1-megapixel offering with a 2-inch LCD. It greatly improves upon the LS70's poor 86,000-pixel resolution, giving the LS80's screen the current industry-standard 230,000 pixels. It can reach an ISO sensitivity of ISO 1600 and up to ISO 6400 in High Sensitivity mode, although no word yet on whether such a high ISO will result in lower resolution. It features 21 Scene modes: Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Self-Portrait, Food, Party, Candle Light, Fireworks, Starry Sky, Beach, Aerial Photo, Snow, High Sensitivity, Baby 1 and 2, Pet, Sunset and Hi-Speed Burst.

Panasonic's version of Auto mode, called Intelligent mode, locks out most settings to aid beginners, and the camera's Macro mode automatically turns on when the lens gets in close to a subject.

The LS80 can snap 3 frames per second (fps) at full resolution in its Burst mode, and up to 10 fps at a lowered 2-megapixel resolution. It features a Movie mode that can record 848 x 480, 640 x 480, and 320 x 240 at 30 fps. It runs on two AA batteries and comes in silver, black, and pink.
