Digital Camera Review
Dec 30, 2004
- By Alex Burack
By now, you have probably already been exposed to the flood of advertising surrounding the Olympus Stylus Verve. Television commercials, print ads, and the repetition of the phrase, “find your verve,” all created a growing marketing buzz for arguably the year’s hottest digital camera. The sleek shape and shiny contours of the Verve’s frame (along with the promotional barrage) propelled Olympus into the consciousness of many holiday shoppers. Though manufacturers consistently try variations on traditional forms and motifs, few seem able to “break the mold” and create an appealing new shape that gains practical acceptance.

Picture Quality / Size Options (7.0)
There are seven still image quality settings and size selections available on the Olympus Stylus Verve, all in JPEG format. From largest to smallest, they are as follows:
(SHQ) 2272 x 1704 JPEG
(HQ) 2272 x 1704 JPEG
(SQ1) 2048 x 1536 JPEG
(SQ2) 1600 x 1200 JPEG
(SQ2) 1280 x 960 JPEG
(SQ2) 1024 x 768 JPEG
(SQ2) 640 x 480 JPEG
The user can toggle between these settings to balance the image quality with the amount of space each photograph will consume on the memory card.
Picture Effects Mode (7.5)
There are five picture effects offered on the Stylus Verve, located under the Edit picture subsection of the camera menu. They are: Black & White, Sepia, Fisheye, Soft Focus, and a Resolution reduction feature to minimize the amount of space required for storage. This covers the basic effects inherent to most digital cameras as well as expanding the traditional selection with some unique options. While most in-camera digital picture effects often appear somewhat hollow or gimmicky, the selection offered by the Stylus Verve is more than adequate and provides some interesting effects not available on most competing models, particularly the Fisheye and Soft Focus features.
