Digital Camera Review

By now, you have probably already been exposed to the flood of advertising surrounding the Olympus Stylus Verve. Television commercials, print ads, and the repetition of the phrase, “find your verve,” all created a growing marketing buzz for arguably the year’s hottest digital camera. The sleek shape and shiny contours of the Verve’s frame (along with the promotional barrage) propelled Olympus into the consciousness of many holiday shoppers. Though manufacturers consistently try variations on traditional forms and motifs, few seem able to “break the mold” and create an appealing new shape that gains practical acceptance.

Connectivity
Software (7.5)
The Verve comes with the new Olympus Master editing software. With this program, users can rotate and crop images, make color corrections manually or automatically, create panoramic compositions and reduce red-eye. The user can elect to view a slideshow or thumbnail view of the images. Print and share feature are also available.

Jacks, ports, plugs (6.0)
There are a limited number of ports included on the Stylus Verve. This is partially because the USB terminal, located under the plastic port door on the right side of the camera, doubles as an A/V out using the included “multi-connector” cable.

Direct Print Options (6.0)
Direct printing is possible with the Stylus Verve when using a PictBridge compatible printer.

Memory (6.0)
There is no internal memory included on the Stylus Verve; it records all images to an xD memory card. The Verve comes packaged with a 16MB xD-Picture Card, which can only store 5 SHQ images or 90 images at SQ2, the camera’s lowest quality setting. The Verve can handle cards up to 512MB, which can store 180 images in SHQ setting.

Other features (5.5)
Quick View Button –A “Quick View” control on the Stylus Verve, located just above and to the left of the LCD screen, offers the user an opportunity to go directly into playback mode without engaging the mode dial. This is a nice feature that will conserve time when the user just wants to check an image or when excessive toggling between shooting and playback modes is needed.
