Introduction

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Landscape Sample

Focal length: 8.89mm
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/6.3
Shutter speed: 1/125 of a second

One of the upsides of having a tough camera like this is that you can take pictures if you happen to be stuck in a nor’easter. Most cameras would quickly stop working in a snowstorm, but the Tough 8000 kept on clickin’ like it was a day at the beach. This postcard-worthy shot was taken in iAuto mode, where the camera makes the decisions. It did a decent job, picking a moderate aperture and a fast shutter speed (which was good, as my hands were shaking at the time).

Super Macro Sample

Focal length: 6.35mm
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/4.1
Shutter speed: 1/125 of a second

This shot was taken with the Tough 8000’s Super Macro LED mode, which allows it to focus down to 2cm and turns on a small LED light on the front to illuminate the subject. I was hoping this would give the snow a more sparkly appearance. It sort of worked, but the image is a bit dull. This could be fixed in Photoshop, though; the images we feature here are shown without post-processing or enhancement.

Landscape Sample 2

Focal length: 6.53mm
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/4.1
Shutter speed: 1/100 of a second

This shot was taken in the camera’s Snow scene mode, and shows the varying sharpness of this camera. Although the branch in the center is sharp (the first crop), the ones at the bottom left corner (third crop) are somewhat blurry.

Low Light Sample (program mode)
Focal length: 11.76mm

ISO: 400
Aperture: f/4.7
Shutter speed: 1/4 of a second

This image was shot in program mode, with a single light bulb illuminating the scene from the right, and flash disabled. Under these difficult lighting conditions, the camera chose a medium ISO and slow shutter speed, with decent results. There is significant noise in the image, but details are still visible.
