The 8-megapixel Stylus 830 is part of Olympus's “Design & Performance” series, characterized by slim, weatherproof bodies.  A 5x optical zoom lens, mechanical image stabilization, face detection, and a 2.5-inch LCD are among the highlights of this model, introduced in August. It had a $329.99 introductory price.

Physical Tour

Front
(7.25)
The lens takes up the right half of the front face. When the camera is turned on the 36-180mm lens extends to three tiers. To the top left of the lens are three holes for the camera’s microphone. To the left of the microphone is the flash and self-timer lamp. Below that is the Olympus logo embedded in a shiny silver casing. The Stylus 830’s key specs are printed on the front: 8.0 megapixels, 5x optical zoom, and all-weather.

Back (8.25)
The 2.5-inch LCD monitor takes up most of the camera's back. The zoom lever is to the top right corner of the LCD. The camera’s card access lamp is above and to the right of the zoom lever. A circular arrangement of divots is below the lever; this is meant to aid in handling. To the right of the zoom lever is the mode dial. The lower two thirds of this space is occupied by the four-way controller and two larger levers. The lever below the mode dial accesses the menu system and Playback mode. Beneath this lever is the four-way controller, labeled with black icons that indicate its various functions. Another large lever is beneath this. When the left side is pushed, the amount of information on the display changes or the menu guide appears. A push of the right side of the lever turns the Shadow Adjustment feature on and off or erases images.

Top (7.0)
This perspective shows the Stylus 830's wedge shape. The right side of the top houses the power, shutter, and image stabilizer buttons.

Bottom (2.5)
Located on the left is the battery and memory card compartment and right of that is the tripod socket. The tiny slit to the right of the tripod socket is the hole for the speaker.

Left Side
(7.0)
This side of the Olympus Stylus 830 is featureless.

Right Side (6.0)
Here you will find a multi-connector, connector cover and strap eyelet. The multi-connector allows you to view pictures from the camera on your TV or computer using a USB cable. A rubber hinge connects the door to the body.
