Olympus SP-590UZ Digital Camera Review

Olympus SP-590UZ

Digital Camera Review

3.9 The $450 Olympus SP-590UZ has the biggest zoom in town, a whopping 26x lens, but lacks the performance or features to distance it from the competition.

Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by three actual-size crops.

Landscape Sample
x ISO: 64
shutter speed: 1/320
aperture: f/5.6
focal length: 4.6mm

Shot outdoors, with sunlight white balance. The building and lamppost both show evidence of distortion.
x x x The crops also show some a decent amount of detail is retained, but there is some chromatic aberration.

Macro Sample
x ISO: 64
shutter speed: 1/200
aperture: f/2.8
focal length: 4.6mm

Using macro mode on the face of this statue allowed for razor sharp focus.
x x x The depth of field is pleasantly shallow at maximum aperture, and the background nice and soft.

Color Sample
x ISO: 64
shutter speed: 1/2
aperture: f/8
focal length: 7.87mm

This shot, taken at the narrowest aperture, gives a good feel for how the camera's automatic white balance deals with complex light sources, and how accurately it reproduces colors that we're familiar with.
x x x In our testing, the 590UZ had some trouble with blues and yellows.

Low Light Sample
x ISO: 1600
shutter speed: 1/13
aperture: f/3.4
focal length: 8.19mm

This low light shot was taken on the highest full resolution ISO setting. Unsurprisingly, it is very noisy.
x x x At least some detail was retained in the flowers, but only by considerably under-exposing. The camera had difficulty metering and focusing in this situation.
