With the E-5, Olympus is looking to reclaim the high ground, pitching the E-5 as a do-it-all camera for professional and high-end shooters. But they have an uphill struggle in a fiercely competitive market with competition that is surpassing them in many ways. We looked at a pre-production model of the E-5 at the Photokina show in Cologne, Germany.

The body is large, and feels tough, but handles well. It’s complex like any pro-level camera, but seemed fairly intuitive after a few minutes use.

Burst performance seems strong. No scene modes, but several color modes. Video has been upgraded to 720p, and only records 7 minutes in HD at a time.

The autofocus seems quite fast, and the ISO range is fairly limited (6400 max). Image stabilization is tied to the camera, not the lenses.
