Oki Develops Iris Recognition for Camera Phones

November 27, 2006 – Telecommunications manufacturer Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. announced today that the Japanese company is developing its Iris Recognition Technology to help secure Mobile Terminals.  With plans to be used with camera phones and PDAs, the commercial Iris Recognition Technology is scheduled to hit the market in March 2007.

"Users will now be able to utilize their mobile terminals with security and peace of mind," said Oki General Manager of Business Incubation Division Teruo Iijima in today’s Oki press release.

Because each iris pattern is unique, the eye acts as a pin number for authentication for a mobile phone or PDA, according to the release. Oki promises that Iris Recognition Technology works quick and accurately.

Oki plans to add new iris recognition mobile products. The new products will have a dedicated infrared camera, although the iris technology can operate on a standard mobile phone or PDA, according to the release.

Oki will exhibit the new Iris Recognition Technology for Mobile Terminals at the ITC Telecom World 2006 convention in Hong Kong/st1:place> next month.
