Nikon Updates S-Series: Coolpix S10, S9
August 24, 2006 – In a complete overhaul of the Coolpix Style-series, Nikon Corp. introduced two new 6 megapixel cameras today, the ultra zoom S10 and the S9. The retail price of the S10 is $399 while the S9 is $249. The cameras will be released next month.
As part of the Nikon Coolpix update, the new S10 and S9, along with the newly announced S7C wi-fi enabled camera, will replace the series of Coolpix cameras offered just six months ago.
The Nikon S10 is expected to replace the S4 which was introduced for the same original price of $399 in February. Like the S4, the S10 has a 6 megapixel count, 10 optical zoom, and 2.5-inch LCD.
Also like its predecessor, the Coolpix S10 will feature the swivel LCD for 170 degree viewing. In addition, the S10 will include an added feature (which will be available in all the Nikon cameras announced today), a one-touch portrait button that activates face priority AF, red-eye fix, and D-
lighting. The Nikon S10 also adds vibration reduction.
The S10 has video capabilities of 640x480 at 30fps. The movie mode has audio and is zoom-enabled.
The camera body of the two new cameras, the S10 and S9, is borrowed from earlier models. The sleek wave-like design can be found in the older Style S5 and S6 models, which makes for easier handling especially video recording.
The Coolpix S9 is a smaller version of the S5, the model it will eventually replace, according to Nikon representatives. At $100 less,, the S9 totes the same 6 megapixel count, 3x optical zoom, and 2.5-inch LCD as the S5. The S9 will include the one-touch portrait button and movie mode. In addition, the S9will feature a new stop motion mode to create animation movies. The Coolpix camera also possesses an upgraded, faster shutter speed with a maximum of 1/2000.
Both the Coolpix S10 and S9 will become available on September 22.
