Nikon SLR Camera Shipments Double in Q1
August 3, 2007 – Nikon this week announced its digital camera performance and overall profits rose this quarter year over year. In a three-month period ending June 30, Nikon shipped twice as many SLRs than this time last year, increasing from 360,000 to 760,000 this quarter. Shipments of compact cameras rose 22 percent, growing from 1.67 to 2.03 million units. Nikon also announced it has reached the 40 million unit mark for SLR lenses sold worldwide. Lens shipments nearly tripled in this quarter alone, increasing from 380,000 units to 1.11 million.
Net sales rose from 172.8 to 223.5 billion yen (approx. $1.459 to $1.89 billion USD) - a 29.4 percent growth year over year. Net income increased 59 percent, from 14.7 to 23.4 billion yen (approx. $124.1 to $197.5 million USD).
As a result of its performance this quarter, Nikon adjusted its annual forecast. Nikon now expects to generate 900 billion yen (approx. $9.59 billion USD) in net sales for the year ending March 31, 2008, up from 822.8 billion yen (approx. $6.94 billion USD) last year.
