Introduction

The Nikon S4100 is the 2011 replacement for our pick for last year’s Budget Point & Shoot of the Year. While the new Coolpix is certainly an improvement over the S4000, we were disappointed to so few improvements—and a handful of… un-improvements.

The Nikon Coolpix S4100 launched with an MSRP of $179.95 and is available in black, bronze, purple, red, silver, and plum (pictured).

Noise

Mediocre noise performance can only be helped by using the camera’s auto ISO limiter to cap the ISO around 400.

Resolution

Resolution scores are very strong, but stabilization is less effective than on last year’s model.
