Nikon Reports Net Sales Up 10 Percent in H1
November 9, 2006 – Nikon Corp. announced that net sales grew by 10 percent in the first half of fiscal year 2007 year-over-year, reporting higher sales in the imaging products division. From April 1 to Sept. 30, Nikon reported 377.2 billion yen ($3.19 billion USD) in corporate net sales, up 10 percent from last year’s first half which was at 342.8 billion yen ($2.9 billion). The imaging products division proved to be the strongest of Nikon’s divisions. This year, the imaging division totaled 206.2 billion yen ($1.7 billion) in net sales, up from last year’s 196.3 billion yen ($1.6 billion).
Nikon also reported a significant increase of net income. This year, Nikon made 23.1 billion yen in income ($196.6 million), up 147 percent from last year’s 9.3 billion yen ($79.4 million).
Nikon’s compact digital camera sales grew to 3.7 million in the second quarter up from 3.41 million units sold in the first quarter. Nikon's compact digital camera sales have totaled 7.11 million this year, thus far.
While Nikon compact digitals did well this quarter, Nikon’s DSLR sales dropped. In the second quarter, Nikon sold 550,000 DSLRs, which was down from 790,000 cameras in the first quarter. Nikon DSLRs totaled 1.34 million cameras in the first half, a fifth of the number of Nikon compact cameras sold.
The company predicts that over 2 million DSLRs will be sold and 6.5 million compacts will be sold this fiscal year.
