February 19, 2007 – In an overhaul of its current point-and-shoot product line, Nikon launched two new S-series cameras today, the Coolpix S50 and the Wi-Fi-enabled S50c. Both new cameras include a new anti-shake button, along with face-priority AF, and optical image stabilization. The S50 will retail for $299.95 and the S50c for $349.95. Both cameras will be available in April.

“The Coolpix S50 and S50c combine technologies that are Nikon hallmarks: exquisite design coupled with superior optics and high resolution with advanced picture taking functions that allow anyone to take great pictures,” said Nikon Coolpix general manager of Marketing Bill Giordano in a company press release today.

Like their predecessors, the new Nikon S50 and S50c share a wave-like body design. Both cameras also have a 7.2-megapixel count, a 3x Nikkor optical zoom lens, and a 3-inch LCD display with anti-reflective, 170-degree viewing capabilities, according to the release.

The Nikon S50c also features wireless capabilities. Enhanced with second generation Coolpix Connect 2, the S50c allows users to email photos in wireless hotspots or store up to 2GB of photos on a Nikon server. Unfortunately, the S50c does not include free T-Mobile membership with purchase as the model before, the S7c.

Both Coolpix models include a One-Touch Portrait button that activates three Nikon features: face-priority AF for portraits, in-camera red-eye fix for built-in editing, and D-lighting that duplicates the photo with increased exposure in the shadows.

The S50 and S50c also include a brand new anti-shake button, a dedicated button located on top of the camera.  Like the One-Touch Portrait button, the anti-shake button activates three Nikon functions. In this case, the anti-shake button engages the Optical VR Image Stabilization, increases the sensitivity up to 1600 ISO, and utilizes the Best-Shot Selector (BSS).

The Nikon S50 and S50c also offer Pictmotion slideshows, which enable users to blend photos and videos with music.
