Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Landscape Sample

Focal length: 6.6mm
Aperture: f/10
Shutter: 1/77
ISO: 64

Shot under bright light, using center-weighted metering, and automatic white balance. This was shot in Vivid Color, so the reds, blues and greens have a bit more pop to them. The leftmost crop shows some rather bad purple fringing occurring at extremities of the image.

Macro Sample

Focal length: 6.6mm
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter: 1/76
ISO: 100

Shot in macro mode, with automatic white balance, and matrix (full frame) metering.

The camera unsurprisingly blew out the background, but provided a rather nice depth-of-field overall. Even at ISO 100, you can see a shadow of noise in the background. Generally, details are quite crisp for a 12-megapixel image.

Low Light Sample

Focal length: 9.1mm
Aperture: f/4.3
Shutter: 1/5.3
ISO: 1600

Shot in a room with approximately 40 lux of illumination, with a manual white balance taken.

The camera had trouble correctly exposing this setup, due to the large amount of black in the background, and had to be set to an exposure compensation of -1EV. At ISO 1600, the noise reduction is in full effect, leaving an image that looks severely smeared.

Color Sample

Focal length: 9.1mm
Aperture: f/4.3
Shutter: 1/10
ISO: 64

These are all familiar objects, of known color, that we use to help demonstrate how accurately the camera records hues. In addition, the scene is photographed with automatic white balance, which helps demonstrate its effectiveness.

In our testing, the S630 generally had accurate color, but struggles with dark blues, like on the envelope.
