Conclusion

The Coolpix S4000 is a fairly basic camera that knows a few cool tricks, most notably how to focus on the spot you choose with your fingertip. Browsing photos by swiping your finger across the screen is also kind of fun in a Mac-ish way, though the touch screen doesn't improve the way you set camera controls in any meaningful way. The joys of viewing your photos through accumulated greasy fingerprints should also be considered. And while 720p video is a welcome feature, the lack of HDMI output for watching your videos on a high-def set limits the value here.

Still, given it's compact, comfortable size and shape, and at the reasonably low $200 price, casual photographers who find a touch-screen intriguing shouldn't be discouraged. As for photo quality, though, it's just too early to tell.
