Nikon Coolpix P3
Digital Camera Review
Feb 28, 2006
- By Dan Havlik
Both of Nikon’s recent “performance series” releases, the Coolpix P3 and P4, offer a new 1/1.8-inch CCD chip with 8.1 megapixels of image resolution and introduce Vibration Reduction (VR) and optical image stabilization into its consumer-targeted Coolpix line. Nikon, like a lot of manufacturers these days, is clearly trying to find other ways to attract customers aside from rising megapixel counts. The WiFi enabled P3 goes for $449.950, while the P4 goes for $399.990. Both models will be available this month.

Picture Quality/Size Options
Picture quality on the P3/P4 comes in five flavors. At full resolution, users can capture images at 8M (3264 x 2448). Smaller sizes capture parameters include 5M (2592 x 1944) and 3M (2048 x 1536). For “PC” size, images are captured at 1024 x 768 pixels; for “TV” at 640 x 480 pixels; and in 3:2 at 3264 x 2176. At the maximum 8M size users should expect to be able to print as large as A4 (13 x 19) with pretty decent quality.
Picture Effects Mode
Since the P3/P4 is aimed at a more professional and enthusiast market, Nikon has included few picture effects options on these models. The P3 and P4 do have color options of standard, Vivid, Sepia, Black and White and Cyanotype; the P1 and P2 were the other way around, with no color effects in-camera but in-camera options for saturation, contrast and sharpness.
