Introduction

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Telephoto Sample
Focal length: 10.3mm

Aperture: f/8.0
Shutter: 1/175 second
ISO:200

Meet the Goose family of Brightwaters, NY, captured with the P100 in program mode, using matrix metering, with the camera tripod-mounted. The good news here is that we got the shot at all; Mom and Dad got loudly annoyed wen we approached the group, so that long lens was mission-critical. The bad news: the image is soft, with clearly visible evidence of oversharpening at object edges.

Wide-Angle Sample

Focal length: 4.6mm
Aperture: f/7.1
Shutter: 1/424 second
ISO:160

Shot in program mode with matrix metering and auto white balance, in normal picture mode The color is problematic, with the whites turning quite blue. And no, the light post on the right is not warped in real life; what you’re seeing is barrel distortion at the widest lens setting.

Close-Up Sample

Focal length: 4.6mm
Aperture: f/8
Shutter: 1/334 second
ISO:160

Shot handheld in macro focus mode, aperture priority exposure setting, with the vivid picture mode and -1 stop exposure compensation in bright sunshine. There’s a decent level of detail here, and the intense color reproduction matches our color mode choice.

Low-Light Sample

Focal length: 10.3mm
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter: 1/5 second
ISO:1600

Shot with the P100 mounted on a tripod, at 40 lux, with a custom white balance setting. The camera is set to program mode, standard color, with spot metering off the center white flower. This setup often produces blown-out blooms with point-and-shoot cameras, but the option to meter off the manually-selected focal point produced good exposure results. Image noise is controlled reasonably well, though detail is hit and miss.
