February 16, 2005 – The Nikon D2Hs was announced today as Nikon’s addition to its digital single lens reflex camera line. The D2Hs introduces improvements of its auto focus and white balancing systems, as well as its buffering speed and wireless capabilities. The 4.1-megapixel digital SLR is designed for photojournalists and sports photographers and will be available in March for a retail price of $3,499.95.

“During the development of Nikon’s recently announced D2X professional digital SLR camera, the company created several new technologies and innovations that delivered breakthrough performance in that camera,” said Steve Heiner, general manager for Nikon’s Digital SLR and Professional Products division. “These new innovations have been integrated into the D2Hs to offer photojournalists and sports photographers a camera at par with Nikon’s flagship D2X camera, with comparable performance, features and seamless workflow.”

The new D2Hs offers more speed than the 5-frame-per-second D2X; the Nikon D2Hs can shoot 8 frames per second at its highest resolution for up to 50 consecutive shots. The camera can read and write to its CompactFlash card faster than its predecessor, the D2H, and has increased its wireless transfer speed also. The camera supports the new Nikon WT-2A wireless transmitter, as well as the older WT-1A. With the 2A, the D2Hs has faster transfer speed and increased security. The Nikon D2Hs can also connect to a GPS device and can record the latitude, longitude, altitude, and time in the image file.

While the new model has the same 2.5-inch size of LCD monitor, the D2Hs does have an increased screen resolution of 232,000 pixels. The low temperature polysilicon LCD display has a white LED backlight and a brightness adjustment control on it. With 4.1 megapixels, the Nikon D2Hs has two image size options. It is compatible with Nikon AF-S, VR, D, and G-type lenses, as well as Nikon’s digitally exclusive DX line of lenses.
