Nikon 1 J2 First Impressions Review

$549.95

We stopped by the Nikon booth at Photokina to get hands-on time with the Nikon 1 J2, successor to last year's J1.

Introduction

Ever since Nikon entered the mirrorless camera market with its 1 system line, fans have waited eagerly for an update. With the announcement of the J2 last month, that new model finally came, but we weren't all that impressed with the upgrades. Even with its new surface coating, the J2 looks just like its predecessor, and Nikon didn't bother to change much under the hood either. The J2 has the same CX-format image sensor and image processor as the Nikon J1.

Nikon did increase the resolution on the J2's LCD to 921k-pixels, and the new camera features a Creative mode on the rear control dial that gives you quicker access to different shooting modes (and some new scene mode options). The surface coating on the J2, which is available in six different colors, doesn't feel any different than the J1, so we can't say it represents much of an improvement. You can take a gander at the Nikon 1 J2—with a luscious orange paint job—in our hands-on video from Photokina 2012 above.
