September 1, 2005 – Adding to its slim S-series of digital cameras, Nikon announced the Coolpix S4. This 6 megapixel model departs from the traditional pocket design of the other three S cameras and aims to be a “pocket zoom” instead. The S4 (spec sheet) can be twisted in half so that the 10x optical zoom lens can shoot at a variety of angles. It swivels back into a 4.4 x 2.7 x 1.4-inch flat camera body. The S4 will be available this month at a retail price of $399.95.
The swivel design is a throwback to the Coolpix 900 series cameras, but adds an updated handgrip and its own set of features, of course. The Nikon S4 features 16 scene modes and the in-camera technology that the manufacturer is becoming known for. The S4 can automatically fix red-eye, compensate dark photos with D-lighting, focus directly on faces with its face priority auto focus mode, and warn photographers of potentially blurry pictures.
The Nikon Coolpix S4 includes a 2.5-inch LCD, which photographers can view from any angle when they swivel the camera body. However, it’s the camera’s 38-380mm, f/3.5 zoom lens that heads Nikon’s marketing pitch for the S4. A long zoom that can fit in a 1.4-inch thick and 7.2-ounce camera will be highly portable. Nikon hopes the long zoom and features will make the Coolpix S4 sought by point-and-shooters looking for a more capable photographic alternative.
