Mamiya ZD Not Available in U.S. Yet
March 10, 2006 – Reports are out on several web sites that the Mamiya ZD and ZD Digital Back were released to the public Thursday. These claims apply only to the European market though, as DigitalCameraInfo.com confirmed that Mamiya is not releasing the digital medium format camera in the United States yet. According to a Mamiya sales representative, the products will not be available in the U.S. for another few months. When they are released, pricing is expected to be about $13,000 – so start saving now. The Mamiya ZD and ZD Digital Back were announced at Photokina in September 2004, but plans were very preliminary. Since then, the concept has developed and specifications have been finalized. The Mamiya ZD will have 22 megapixels on a Dalsa 48 x 36 mm CCD and an ASIC imaging processor. The medium format SLR is compatible with Mamiya 645AF lenses and has dual slots for CompactFlash and SD cards.
Pictures from the camera can be saved as 35MB RAW files or compressed into JPEGs or can be saved in both formats simultaneously. The huge files can then be transferred via firewire or video-out cable. The medium format DSLR is one of the fastest in its class with a 1.2 fps burst that lasts for 10 shots. The ZD is also the only camera in the world that has a removable low pass filter.
The Mamiya ZD’s 6.4 x 6 x 3.6-inch body is constructed from magnesium alloy and has some heft at 2.8 lbs. The camera has a 1.8-inch LCD screen with 130,000 pixels and a 100 percent accurate view of the recorded picture.
No information was provided on the exact availability date for the U.S.
