Introduction

The Lytro Light Field Camera is the world's first such camera for general consumers. Light field photography is a heady concept, but Lytro sums it up as a technology that captures "all of the light traveling in every direction in every point in space." Long story short, it lets the user focus and refocus the photo after the photo has been taken. This is legitimately the most groundbreaking new technology in photography since the digital age began.

We jumped at the chance to spend an hour with a pre-production version of the Light Field Camera at a press event during the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. The concept is undeniably excellent, but we have a few reservations about the place of this first-gen product in a crowded marketplace. Read on for our first impressions.
