Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Product Sample

Focal length: 14.2mm
ISO: 320
Aperture: f/4.1
Shutter speed: 1/40 second

In this shot of a selection of common consumer goodies, you can get a feel for how well the Z950 captures color. This was shot in the Natural Color mode, in program mode under mixed fluorescent and incandescent lighting. In the crops below, you can see how the camera shows some over sharpening; the edge of the cup is a little jagged, and there is a slight fringe to it caused by the processing the camera does.

Portrait Sample
Focal length: 6.2mm

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter speed: 1/500 second

This shot of a performer getting ready for the HONK! 2009 festival was taken with the camera on program mode. For this shot, the camera chose a fast shutter speed and open aperture, which enabled it to keep the ISO low. As you can see from the crops below, the noise in the images is low, but the highlights (such as the sunny side of the gold fabric on the blue meanie’s chest) are rather blown out; there is just no detail left in them.

Macro Sample

Focal length: 6.2mm
ISO: 125
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter speed: 1/30 second

This shot of the state of my iPhone after a close encounter with a set of stairs illustrates one of the issues with the Z950; the poor macro mode. the camera could not focus in any closer: 4 inches is the closest that the camera can focus. So, you can forget getting the sort of close-up macro shots you see on nature programs.

Landscape Sample

Focal length: 6.2mm
ISO: 400
Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter speed: 1/30 second

This shot was taken in the landscape scene mode on a typical Boston dull day. Although the camera was in the landscape mode, it did not increase the aperture beyond f/3.5, which means that the closer objects are in focus, but the more distant ones are not. If you look at the crop of the leaves below, you can also see how the photo gets rather soft at the edges: the details of the leaves are rather lost in the haze.
