Kodak Announces 18-Megapixel Image Sensor for Pentax 645

March 17, 2005 – Kodak announced the release of its KAF-18000CE image sensor, the same one included in the freshly announced Pentax Digital 645 medium format DSLR. The sensor fits in the middle of Kodak’s line of medium format image sensors. The top of the line model boasts 22 megapixels and the bottom a healthy 16 megapixels. The new KAF-18000CE packs 18.6 total megapixels.

The new sensor employs Kodak’s 9-micron pixel design that enables accurate colors. According to the Kodak press release, the KAF-18000CE also includes “a dual-output architecture that enables faster sensor read-out times, allowing camera designers to achieve increased frame rates in their final camera designs.” The image sensor will have 18 effective megapixels for the Pentax 645 Digital, which was unveiled today at the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo.
